Outreach and Advocacy
The Outreach and Advocacy Committee’s focus is to build a strong, united coalition through the following practices:
- Developing and enacting a social media campaign designed to increase awareness about GNOHA, GNOHA member organizations, and HousingNOLA.
- Mobilizing and organizing members to advocate for housing issues in the context of the city, state, and federal elections, and holding elected officials to their commitments.
- Updating and sharing a collective advocacy calendar that will serve as a guide for GNOHA staff and member organizations about important upcoming meetings and advocacy opportunities.
The Homeownership Committee handles the Own the Crescent Homeownership Campaign and addresses issues directly related to the creation of single family, for-sale units, as well as The Third Line, a marketing campaign for the State’s Workforce Housing Initiative that assists musicians and tourism industry workers without steady incomes with purchasing homes. The Homeownership committee promotes homeownership in New Orleans by creating innovative strategies that facilitate homeownership, as well as exploring shared solutions to reduce costs and build capacity.
The Rental Committee addresses issues where policy disrupts practice. It seeks to inform policy makers of both the advantages and challenges associated with the development of “affordable” rental housing – i.e. the green building, sustainability and resident/developer subsidy. This committee also reviews programs that will have a direct impact on affordable housing management and vulnerable rental housing populations like veterans, public and supportive housing tenants and low-income renters.
Resiliency (Formally Emergency Preparedness)
The Emergency Preparedness Committee was rebranded into the Resiliency Committee. The purpose of the Resiliency Committee is to make New Orleans more resilient to flooding and provide resident support during emergency situations. The Committee also facilitate communication between GNOHA members and federal, state and local officials following a disaster or emergency.
